The Drac Pack is Back!

Longtime visitors to The Comic Fanatic.Com are well aware that I am a huge fan of Jason Henderson’s Sword of Dracula. Henderson’s new spin on the classic Count Dracula has been the most original look at the Lord of the Vampires since Stoker put pen to paper all those years ago. And this is a premise that I would love to see on the spinner racks on a monthly basis. So I eagerly await and take whatever Sword of Dracula goodness that I can get. The latest morsel? Sword of Dracula/Vampirella.

While Vampirella has been a mainstay and an icon in the comics industry for decades, Sword of Dracula is a newer property, having been published by Image and IDW before landing at Digital Webbing. I’m not sure if I’ve read any SoD comics before, and I certain didn’t recognize much here. The good news is that this is an accessible introduction to the concept, which is sort of like Buffy the Vampire Slayer meets Mission Impossible. The better news is that SoD creators Jason Henderson and Greg Scott handle Vampirella incredibly well. She’s not depicted as a blood-sucking sexpot heroine in this story; instead, she’s a rogue agent in a supernatural underworld of crime, commerce and curses.

Collaboration on comic makes for great read
Sunday, February 17, 2008

Most of the time when two comic book companies cross over their characters the result is a forgettable cliche. The two heroes fight each other over mistaken identities then realize the error and team up to take on the real bad guy.

“Sword of Dracula/ Vampirella” is a rare exception to that.

It shouldn’t work but is does.

Published by Digital Webbing, “Sword of Dracula/Vampirella” is a good-looking book that is a great read.

SWORD OF DRACULA/VAMPIRELLA: EXTENDED & DANGEROUS #1 — Although there is a ton of backstory involved in this story that I found to be a bit hard to swallow, once the action starts, there’s no denying that this is an intense vampire gore fest of the highest caliber. Vampirella is a complete bad@$$. Dracula lives up to his legend. And Ronnie Van Helsing proves to be a noble force against the bloodsuckers.

Before I get to the Links, I need to get around to mentioning a review book that came through last week. Digital Webbing sent a review copy of Sword of Dracula/Vampirella: Extended and Dangerous. Judging by the title alone, one might think it’s just a trashy read that tries to cash in on the little remaining currency of those characters. Talk about a surprise, then. This book was pretty darn good. It exists in a world of vampires and vampire hunters akin to Blade, with an apparent descendant of Van Helsing going after some rogue vampire. It’s mostly espionage and action, with quality writing and art, and even Vampirella comes across as more intriguing than kitschy. Good stuff all the way around.

“Extended and Dangerous”

Sword of Dracula returns with a one-shot story that expands a 10 page Vampirella crossover from Vampirella Magazine into a full length adventure that, if you’re familiar with Sword of Dracula, should make you feel right at home. If you’re not familiar with the title, it would be worth your while to check out the “Volume One” trade that collects the first 6 issue mini-series from a few years ago. In a nutshell, Veronica “Ronnie” Van Helsing runs The Polidorium, “a Mission Impossible-style organization” who’s main goal is to hunt down notorious international terrorist, Dracula. But this isn’t your garden-variety Dracula. Henderson came up with a very interesting twist for this incarnation. Dracula can control blood, using it as a weapon, which we see happening very quickly in this new story.

Ronnie Van Helsing grabs a witness that Dracula wants - but unbeknownst to her, Vampirella is interested in him too.

Some crossovers just sound weird, and others seem to be naturals. At first I thought this sounded weird, because Vampi may be a horror comic, but it’s one with a decided cheesecake bent. No matter how dark it gets, it still stars a woman wearing little more than dental floss. Sword of Dracula, on the other hand, was not cheesecake-y at all, but a psychologically dark horror comic about a secret team of vampire hunters with quite a few issues of their own, fighting a kind of Dracula who has power over blood. (Sounds strange, and it is, but it works.) I didn’t see how these two could mesh comfortably, except there’s this - take away Vampi’s cheesecake, and she fits in perfectly. That’s what Henderson and Scott do, and the result is a - dare I say it? - surprisingly awesome comic. I expected not to like this, and I loved it. It reminded me of how much I miss Sword of Dracula.
